Virtual Wild West Relay Team Relay Challenge.

I thought I would make a virtual relay for a great relay race in Colorado. I ran this event as a member of a 12 person team in 2005. Team members couldn’t make it for 2006, and it looks like I will be unable to run it in 2007. So let’s run it virtually. This challenge will start April 4th and run until July 18th. Signups are open until March 31st. Teams will then be created and team members will be listed in the forum. Teams then can determine the name of their team.
Here are the details…

The relay is 195 miles from Ft Collins, CO to Steamboat Springs, CO. There are 6 people on a team, and the race legs are run in order, so each team member will run 6 legs with 15 days off between each leg challenge. To make this work in a virtual environment, there will be a separate challenge for each leg, the total time for all legs will be tallied up to determine the overall winning team. Each leg challenge will last 3 days, and the assigned runner will need to complete that leg mileage in the fastest amount of time.

If a team member doesn’t complete the required mileage in the 3 day period, the longest time for that leg posted by all teams + 1 minute per mile will be posted for the team that missed the leg. (So if the slowest team for a 5 mile leg records 50 minutes, the team that missed that leg will get a 55 minute time recorded for that leg)

When you sign up you will be given a number. To create teams I will use the random number generator at: http://www.random.org/nform.html. Teams will be created with 6 members, depending on what number you signed up with you will be placed on a team according to the random generator. We can get a lot of people signed up for this one, since each challenge will only involve 1 member from a team, the update bot, and myself to send out invites. So we could have up to 98 teams with 6 members per team.

The real Wild West Relay allowed for teams with varying number of members (2 – 6, 12). But I think I will keep the virtual challenge to 6 member teams, this will help get more teams that are full.
